Implementing VuFind: A Public Library Improves Electronic Search Quality and Saves Searcher Time

Web-scale discovery services (WSDs) are a widespread phenomenon sweeping university libraries across the world. In this article the authors discuss this trend and their experience working on a test server with the open source discovery layer VuFind. Developed by Demian Katz of Villanova University, VuFind’s potential to index not only the library’s catalog but also proprietary databases through the integration of application program interfaces (APIs) offers public libraries the opportunity to develop a seamless website-to-catalog experience, thereby building a true virtual branch for their patrons.     

ARL Cataloger Librarian Roles and Responsibilities Now and In the Future

This article details the results of a 2011 study of cataloger librarians’ changing roles and responsibilities at academic Association of Research Libraries. The study participants, cataloging department heads, report that cataloger librarian roles are expanding to include cataloging more electronic resources and local hidden collections in addition to print materials. They are also creating non-MARC metadata. The increased usage of vendor products and services is also affecting the roles of cataloger librarians at some institutions. The article explores what skills cataloger librarians will need in the future and how libraries are providing training for that future.

Managing the Electronic Resources Lifecycle: Creating a Comprehensive Checklist Using Techniques for Electronic Resource Management (TERMS)

One of the core functions of the electronic resources librarian (ERL) consists of managing various stages of the electronic resource lifecycle. In order to do this effectively, it is extremely helpful to have a detailed guide on hand. An e-resources acquisition checklist can assist the librarian in covering all aspects of evaluation, acquisition, renewal, and cancellation of e-resources such as databases, e-books, e-journals, and more. Such a tool can be indispensable, especially for new ERLs attempting to get a grasp on the logistics of electronic resources management. Using the newly created Techniques for Electronic Resource Management, the author details the process by which librarians navigate the e-resources lifecycle.     

Libraries,Mobile Devices,and the Visible College

Bryan Alexander described the digital environment that we live in, giving an extensive overview of the current state of interactive devices, particularly mobile devices, which are moving us beyond the personal computer. He covered recent major developments that have transformed the world in surprising ways in a rather short period of time. The world of apps is further expanding what these devices can do, also bringing with them more challenges to individual privacy. Gaming and augmented reality are becoming deeply embedded in much of what we do. Alexander laid out four possible futures that these contemporary developments could lead to.

科技报告资源开发利用对于科技发展和技术创新、放大国家财政投资效益,具有突出重要的意义。建立统一的国家科技报告开发利用体系应妥善处理好知识产权问题。结合科技报告开发利用的实际,分析了科技报告公共查询、文献传递、出版发行和数据挖掘中的知识产权风险,并提出了要完善授权制度、利益分享制度、安全管理制度、监管制度及反馈制度相关对策建议。     

中美欧现代信息服务业发展水平比较分析

本文设计了一套基于不同国别行业统计标准对照表构建的信息服务业行业范围界定及跨国比较方案.并基于第二次全国经济普查数据库、美国服务业年度普查数据库及欧盟统计局结构性商业统计数据库等基础数据资源,收集并整理了中国、美国和欧盟24国的信息服务业发展数据,综合比较了中美欧三地信息服务业的整体差异,并重点分析了中美两国信息服务业的发展的具体差距.针对上述差距,提出了若干未来推进我国信息服务业发展的对策建议.     

青年编辑依托期刊发展平台的成长之路探析 ——以《中国天然药物》编辑部为例

以《中国天然药物》为例,探讨青年编辑如何在工作实践基础上,依托期刊发展平台,不断提高自身业务素质,包括:依托期刊国际化平台,提高英语水平,拓宽知识面;通过定期组稿和召开学术会议,培养跟踪学科前沿的能力;借助期刊主办大型学术活动,锻炼组织沟通能力;以给编委提供检索情报为契机,开展文献计量学课题研究;总结期刊发展经验,提高撰写编辑学论文的能力。期望本文能为青年编辑的成长提供借鉴。
